New chair gives a lift to senior
by Eliza Hussman, Chronicle Staff Writer
Ursula Crane, 92, has diminished strength in her arms and legs, and cannot get out of a regular reclining chair without help. Crane’s doctor suggested a lift chair, which reclines into a sleeping position and tilts forward, making it easier to get in and out.
Getting a lift chair for Crane wasn’t easy.
Some lift chairs can cost more than $1,500. Crane could not afford one on her own, and neither her insurance nor her family could cover the cost. Friends in Sonoma Helping (FISH), referred her to the Season of Sharing Fund, which provides aid to those in need, including seniors. With the help of FISH and Season of Sharing, Crane purchased a new, top-of-the-line lift chair. “Now, she has the Jaguar of chairs.”
Her new chair is strategically placed so she can see both the television and outside. Light streams into the apartment and she has a view of palm trees that lead into her complex’s parking lot.
Crane feels that she can now get in and out of her chair securely, and it has helped give her a sense of independence.
About the fund
