Listen to Podcasts on Senior Care
In the latest podcast from LivHOME –#15 entitled “The Myth of Independence”–Steve Barlam, Chief Professional Officer of LivHOME, discusses the idea of independence as an aspiration for seniors. He explains just what seniors mean when they say they want their independence, and points out that what they actually need is interdependence. Steve offers advice for family members seeking to introduce this idea and explains that there is a lesson in this for all who serve as caregivers and friends to seniors.
Steve gives an example from life about a senior who insisted on self-sufficiency, and fell while replacing light bulbs in her home. Her fall put her in the hospital, and then eventually into a nursing home. This is a case of independence gone awry, leading to dependence. Steve’s message for seniors is that accepting help from others is as important as giving help, and may end up saving one’s independence.
