Caregiver Rescues Patient from Burning Home
Anita Atienza, a home health care worker in Northern California, was recently commended by the Fire Chief of the City of Fremont for her bravery in in handling a dangerous situation in her client’s home.
On April 27, 2009, a fire broke out in the home while Atienza was on duty. Not only did she remove burning items from the closet to the exterior of the house, but she went back inside under smoky conditions to remove her disabled patient to safety, before quickly contacting emergency services. Her actions prevented the fire from spreading to more of the house, and saved the patient from smoke exposure and possibly severe injuries.
According to Atienza, “The day after the fire, the family was so happy they gave me lots of flowers and the biggest box of chocolates I ever saw.”
Professional HealthCare at Home is Atienza’s employer. The company’s CEO, John Griscavage, also thanked Atienza for her efforts and commitment. “She is a great example of how we serve our patients and community,” he states. All of the company’s skilled nursing professionals, rehabilitation therapists, home health aides and personal caregivers are trained in emergency procedures as a fundamental part of their care duties, with ongoing training updates. “The home environment presents many potential hazards,” continues Griscavage. “Our company is committed to the highest level of safety and comfort for clients and employees.”
